Hst Proposal Id #7826 Cool Stars Low-Mass Stars

Scientific paper

We propose to obtain JHK images with NICMOS/NIC2 of 5 well populated and/or very metal rich globular clusters in M31. Some of these clusters have optical spectra that are as strong lined as those of giant ellipticals. The combination of old age and high Fe/H make these clusters unlike any know in the Galaxy. From the data we will be able to determine the bolometric luminosity function and colors for stars on the upper several magnitudes of their giant branches and distinguish between long period variables and other giants. This will allow us to check for an extension of the AGB in these clusters and to provide independent estimates of their metallicity. It will also allow a fruitful comparison of the cluster giant branches with those of metal rich globulars in the Galactic bulge and of Galactic and M31 bulge fields. The high metallicities of the program clusters will make these observations of particular interest for furthering our understanding of the evolution of metal rich stars, and for the population synthesis models meant to study the stellar content of distant, unresolvable bulges and elliptical galaxies.
