Recent progress in applying near infrared spectroscopy to the study of active galactic nuclei is reviewed. This wavelength region contains lines which complement lines in the visible for studies of the reddening and physical conditions. The measurements of hydrogen, helium, O I lines are discussed. The H alpha observations in Seyfert 2 galaxies are presented. The origin of (Fe II) and H2 lines and 3.28 microns feature emission observed in Seyfert type galaxies is considered. Star forming activity and interactions between the active gas and circumstellar gas are discussed.
