We present near-infrared spectra of the symbiotic-like object MWC 560 obtained during and after its spectroscopic-photometric outburst in 1990 January. Two spectra, which cover the 0.7-1.4 μm wavelength range, were acquired approximately three months and one year after MWC 560 was reported to be in outburst. The spectra are dominated by the cool giant, displaying prominent absorptions due to TiO and VO bands shortward of 1 μm. We did not detect any emission features, however, an absorption due to He I λ10830 was present in both spectra. In 1990 April, this feature was blueshifted from the laboratory rest wavelength by ˜-1700 km s-1 and had a FWHM of ˜2200 kin s-1. The later observation of 1991 January found that the feature had weakened and was blueshifted by ˜-1000 km s-1 with a FWHM of ˜1200 km s-1. The near-IR data are used to calculate the properties of the M giant and physical parameters in MWC 560. Our infrared spectra coupled with infrared photometry indicate a M5-M6 III spectral class for the M giant in the system. A distance estimate of 2.5±0.3 kpc to MWC 560 is determined from the apparent brightness at 1.25 μm. The column density along the line of sight to the M giant is estimated from the He I λ10830 absorption and found to be N(H+)˜1.0×1020 cm-2.
