The contribution of red supergiants and massive red giants to the near-IR luminosity is investigated using data published by Soifer et al. (1984) on the IR complete minisurvey sample of IRAS galaxies. These data indicate that the far-IR and the near-IR luminosities are correlated. It was found that, in starbursts younger than about 100 Myr, the near-IR radiation is dominated by supergiants, while in older starbursts, the dominant contribution comes from red giants and AGB stars.
