We propose to use our Near-Infrared IMager (NIRIM) as a visitor instrument at the WIYN telescope in order to image ~10 proto- planetary nebulae, which are objects in transition from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula. NIRIM performed well during its test observations on Sept. 2 and 3, 2001. We will image these proto- planetary nebulae using NIRIM's narrow band filters centered on the H_2, [FeII], Br(gamma) and [CI] lines and nearby continuum filters. These images will reveal the spatial distribution of the photodissociation regions, ionized gas regions and shocked-gas regions. We will compare these images with our other studies of these objects in the dust emissions, and molecular gas emissions. Our main scientific goal is to understand the relative importance of shocks from fast winds and photodissociation and photoionization by the central star in the formation of a planetary nebula.
