With the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, discussion of the hazards posed by cosmic impacts with Earth and the effects that may occur, both locally and globally, has intensified. The relative hazards posed by more frequent small impacts compared with much rarer, but more devastating large impacts are discussed. Both the sociological aspects of how low-probability but high-consequence disasters are perceived, and the public policy aspects of what course of action a prudent international community should pursue, are presented.
