The advantages of studying near-earth asteroids (NEAs) are examined with respect to planetary formation, and some strategies are outlined for their study. An overview is given of telescope-based data on asteroids, and it is suggested that sample-return missions would yield better data on the composition and geochronology of the objects. Asteroid sample returns also provide better means for assessing probable meteorite parent bodies and the distribution of asteroid taxonomic classes in the solar system. The samples can be studied to evaluate the potential for asteroid resource utilization in space. Most NEAs are considered viable and useful targets for a sample-return mission, and the spacecraft for such a mission would have to be prepared for global reconnaissance and either landing or penetrating capabilities.
