Nd data on Phanerozoic detrital sediments from France are presented in order to evaluate whether addition of mantle-derived Nd into sediments has significantly declined during the Phanerozoic and to compare recent and Archean crustal regimes. Comparison of crustal residency ages with stratigraphic ages through geologic time suggests a three-stage history: (1) for rocks older than 2 Ga, stratigraphic and crustal residence axes coincide; (2) from 2 to 1 Ga, crustal residence ages level off at about 2 Ga and then (3) derease to 1.4 Ga in recent sediments. Two extreme models can account for the observations: an internally driven model, in which variable quantities of mantle material are added to the crust, and an externally driven model, in which the rate of crustal recycling is low in the Archean but increases rapidly at the onset of the atmospheric oxygen buildup and the development of soil-supported life.
