In this paper we describe the development of the NCUBE-1 student satellite that is being built by students from four Norwegian universities. The Norwegian Space Centre and Andøya Rocket Range initiated the project in 2001 with a payload feasibility study involving 60 students. The main purpose of the project is to build competence in space related fields among university students and establish an industrial and academic network for future Norwegian satellite activity. This is obtained by designing a picosatellite based on student work at the 4 different Norwegian universities and colleges, supported with resources from the industry. A total of 16 students from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Oslo, the University College of Narvik (HiN), and the Agricultural University of Norway (NLH) are currently involved in the project.
