An effort to develop a lightweight, high power solar array at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has produced a trough solar concentrator of novel design. The NRL design utilizes two thin film reflectors, supported and tensioned by catenary wires, to increase the power output of a fold-out solar panel array. A novel reflector stowage design allows the reflectors to be wider than the solar cell panel to produce geometric concentration ratios approaching the theoretical limit of 3 to 1. Another advantage of the NRL design is that the outer solar panel is exposed to allow energy collection while the array is stowed. A proof of concept model has been developed and tested successfully for stowage and deployment mechanism integrity. Research and analysis is ongoing for a large-scale concentrator, and a specific power of greater than 100 W/Kg is projected.
