The sky distribution of galaxies to limiting magnitudes of 19 to 21 is discussed. It is shown that if various distorting factors are taken into account, the distribution will be fully defined by random variations in the number of galaxy systems with a mean multiplicity of visible members of the order of 3 to 4. Simple expressions for the ratio (I) between the dispersion in the number of galaxies observed in an elementary field and the mean number of galaxies in the same field are derived, and four models of the apparent galaxy distribution are examined, including the case of superclusters. It is found that the value of I in the Jagiellonian field at limiting B magnitudes of 18.7, 19.5, 20.3, and 21 is a linear increasing function of elementary-field area and that violations of this relation in small elementary fields result from incomplete inclusion of clusters within the elementary-field boundaries. The probable mean angular diameter of clusters to a limiting magnitude of 21 is estimated to be less than 0.18 deg of arc.
