The present paper deals with the controversial question whether the magnetospheric or ionospheric dynamo is the principal source of electric fields and currents during quiet periods (days) at high- and mid-latitudes. The high-latitude and mid-latitude currents, which vary simultaneously under the action of the interplanetary magnetic field, are compared, and data are presented which permit evaluation of the contributions of the magnetospheric and ionospheric dynamo to the mid-latitude currents. From the results of the analysis it appears that the high-latitude and mid-latitude portions of the terrestrial magnetic field are generated by different sources.
