The expansion of time series of spherical harmonic coefficients (SHCs) of secular variations of the geomagnetic field in natural orthogonal components (NOCs) is examined. It is shown that, in order to obtain stable EOCs, it is necessary and sufficient to analyze a set of SHCs up to n = 3. Coefficients with n greater than 3 can be obtained as a linear combination of EOCs obtained in that manner.
