Scheduled for early next century, the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) is a convergence initiative to reduce the life cycle costs of current operations. NPOESS combines a number of programs supporting weather, national security, and science needs. Meteorological, science, and national security data are now being collected on a multitude of platforms including the Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) program, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), and several NASA and international spacecraft. New technologies will be needed to reduce the power, mass, and volume requirements of current spacecraft and sensors, to improve the performance and reliability of existing instruments, and to obtain measurements not currently available. This paper identifies some of the technologies needed to fit a multitude of instruments onto a single platform, in addition to the technologies needed to satisfy more stringent requirements and measurements not yet successfully taken from space.
