NASA's High Energy Astrophysics program has undertaken consideration of an orbiting X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) that can be lofted by the Space Shuttle in the early 1990s. The mirrors of the X-ray telescope will employ Wolter Type I grazing incidence mirrors. Aperture will be of the order of 1.2 m, and focal length about 12 m. Focal plane instruments have been tentatively identified as three high resolution imagers and two moderate resolution ones, a high resolution dispersive spectrometer, and a focal plane polarimeter. Particular emphasis will be given to the study of SNRs.
