The paper presents calculations of the upper bound on pulsar luminosities, assuming coherent radiation by an antenna-type mechanism. The narrowband emission spectra and pulsar phenomena accommodated by broadband radiation are discussed, noting that the fast pulsar luminosities demand strong clumping in a high-density relativistic plasma. Overall, broadband coherence accounts best for the range of spectra, pulse shapes, frequencies, and the absence of aberration effects.
