The author has tried to verify the impulsive approximation (Spitzer, 1958) for encounters between clusters and giant molecular clouds (GMC's) by direct N-body-calculations. The amount of energy needed to destroy the cluster by a single passage has been proved to be in the order of magnitude of the initial cluster energy. This however is not true for impacts which are smaller than the cloud radius and very slow encounters. The results verify Spitzer's predictions. The mass loss and therefore the gain of energy could not be determined exactly. The non-isolated state of the cluster in the galactic tidal field leads to a non-equilibrium and a steady mass loss caused by escaping stars. No criterion has been found which would allow a precise determination of escapers i.e. of the mass loss.
