The paper examines reactions involving the photodissociation and photoelectron-dissociation of N2, yielding N(3s 4P) in the daytime upper atmosphere. It is usually considered that the N(4Pj) components are populated with equal probability in these reactions. The present study demonstrates that experimental data on N I 120 nm emission can be explained by assuming that the N(4Pj) components are populated with different probabilities in the reactions considered.
