Possibility of propulsion production by means of MW energy source disposed outside of an accelerating craft is discussing. MW energy supply conception is worked out in less degree in comparison with the laser one. Meanwhile, microwaves are attractive from the point of non-absorbing energy delivery through the atmosphere, relative simplicity of MW beam control and positioning, high efficiency of MW generators. The limitation for microwave energy application comes from the fact that the threshold of MW breakdown is sufficiently less than that for infrared or shorter wavelength lasers. The critical problem of MW energy transformation into heat is considered. Both experimental data and theoretical considerations for the efficiency of high-power MW beams interaction with gas, plasma and solid bodies are exposed. The cost of a thrust is shown to attain values up to lN/kW under atmospheric air pressure. Combination of laser and MW beams can also be regarded as prospective.
