Calculations are presented which show the mutual influence of the emission properties of ice mantles and silicate cores. Experimentally determined optical constants have been used in this work. The results show that the intensity of silicate absorption bands is seriously affected by an ice mantle even for small ratios of the outer and inner radii. Beyond a critical value of this ratio, which depends on the kind of silicate considered as the core, the composite grains behave as pure ice particles. This condition may be reached in dense molecular clouds but not in normal H I regions.
