The rigorous expansion without approximation of the mutual gravitational potential energy of N solid bodies is expressed in terms of harmonic coefficients of each body. The Euler dynamical equations for the motion of the rigid earth's axis are integrated analytically by the method of variation of parameters. The nutation of the earth is characterized, and it is suggested that the procedure can be used to study problems such as the libration of the moon and the large oscillations of the obliquity of Mars which result from gravitational perturbations caused by other planets.
