Black Holes, X-Ray Binaries, Accretion And Accretion Disks

Scientific paper

Variability is one of the ubiquitous characteristics of accreting black holes extending across all wavelengths. Variability provides information about timescales and causal connections within and between components of the accretion flow and/or outflow, and several independent mechanisms appear to be working to produce correlations between wavelengths. One mechanism is reprocessing of X-ray variability by the disk and/or companion star, another appears to be related to emission from a jet, or the accretion flow at the base of a jet. This brief review will summarize results from two outbursts of black hole candidate transients this year, XTE J1118+480 and Swift J1753.5-0127.
