Observational data on the 10 AM Her type binaries are compared with models. The origin of the components of the radiation observed from such objects is discussed. Multiwavelength photometry and polarimetry of AM Her systems in the optical and near IR in conjunction with models of the cyclotron emission can be used to constrain the temperature, size, and shape of the emission region. The data require temperatures of order 20keV indicating that cyclotron radiation is produced in the shock heated region and not in cooler preshock regions, and indicate small flat emitting regions with diameter 10 times the height. Such observations can also yield information on the temperature structure within the emitting region.
