We develop a multiscale pyramid approach to multifractal analysis of two dimensional images. The resulting techniques are applied to IRAS maps of star forming regions in order to quantify and compare their structure. First, we present mosaics of 60 mu m and 100 mu m data from the IRAS Galaxy Atlas fields in Taurus and Orion. After reviewing the characteristics of multiscale transforms and multifractal analysis with generalized dimensions D_q, we develop a multiscale multifractal method. The multifractal approach is more general and better suited for characterizing astronomical maps than previous efforts using uniform fractals. Our multiscale approach further refines the standard multifractal technique. Finally, the results of applying this method to the IRAS mosaics are presented and discussed. This research was conducted at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with the support of research grants from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
