We report first results from a spectroscopic monitoring campaign of 581 southern B-type stars. Our multi-epoch spectra allow to derive the multiplicity rate as a function of spectral type from B0 to B9. Additionally, a number of previously unknown Be stars have been discovered raising the frequency of the Be phenomenon in our sample from 7% to at least 18%. The similar binary fraction in Be stars and in “normal” B-type stars argues against a companion-induced Be phenomenon.
