A diameter-limited sample of 845 Sb-Sd galaxies is compiled. Over the last century 166 SN events have been recorded in these galaxies, and two or more SNe have been found in 23 of the galaxies. The apparent frequency distribution of SNe for the 845 galaxies is non-Poissonian; this is due not only to a dependence of the SN production rate on global properties of the galaxies (Hubble type and luminosity) but also to the nonuniformity of SN searches and a strong discrimination against the discovery of multiple SN events in high inclination Sc-Sd galaxies. The discrimination with regard to inclination is not primarily due to preferential observing of face-on galaxies. There is also a marked decline in the SN discovery rate with increasing distance. The formation of SN progenitors is discussed briefly.
