In the course of searching for alluvial fans and other specific features in the major image data sets covering large fractions of the surface of Mars, we have developed a number of optimized approaches and present the results of those strategies. Multiple methods will be presented, each analyzed for its own merit, as well as applied to the search for alluvial fans, which will be presented as our case study. We address searching according to MOC data, MOLA data and THEMIS data, as well as using combinations for limits and multiple runs. Each of these different techniques and levels of detail will be examined and presented in terms of reliability, time consumption, efficiency, applicability to specific search criteria, including their major problems or benefits.
