A 12-plate wide-gap spark chamber to be used in a large gamma-ray telescope is described. This spark chamber was calibrated by means of positron and 'labelled' gamma-ray beams from a particle accelerator. Specific performance results are discussed which were obtained with spark modules consisting of aluminum plates 2 mm thick (for the HV electrode) and 4 mm thick (for the ground electrode). The angular accuracy in measuring the arrival direction of a 100-MeV gamma ray is shown to be about 2 deg of arc for normal incidence and about 3 deg of arc for deflection. The accuracy in measuring gamma-ray energy is approximately 30% for energies of 50 to 200 MeV.
