Solar flares and coronal mass ejections are among the most energetic events in the solar system. These events occur in active regions in the solar corona, formed through the convective action of subsurface fluid motions pushing magnetic flux tubes through the Sun's surface, the photosphere. It has long been recognized that through characterizing active region magnetic field complexity we can begin to understand which active region properties are important indicators of solar eruptive events. We show that two such complexity measures, the multifractal spectrum and the multiscale turbulence spectrum, have enormous potential for the prediction of these events in a accurate and timely manner. Furthermore we show that they are directly related to physical measurements of field gradients and flux emergence, thereby allowing a cross calibration of unitless SOC measures to the distribution of measures with physical units.
