The dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) comprise the smallest, most numerous, and least complex type of galaxies and therefore may have had relatively simple histories of chemical evolution. This has motivated the present proposal to investigate in greater detail than before the metal abundances of numerous stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The spectra of approximately 325 red giants in Sculptor will be observed at the near-infrared CaII triplet with Hydra on the 4m telescope. The observations will be compared with similar ones of globular clusters of known metal abundance in order to determine the abundances of the Sculptor stars. The metallicity distribution and the metallicity gradient will be determined from these observations, which will be compared with the ones we are measuring for the Draco and Ursa Minor dSphs. These observations will document the chemical enrichments of these galaxies which will constrain scenarios of galaxy evolution.
