A preliminary study is presented of the temporal variability of the blazar Markarian 421 using data derived from the Whipple 10 m telescope and the RXTE satellite from the 2001 observing season. A flux correlation study for the source as derived from Whipple and RXTE's ASM is presented and used as argument for more dedicated multi-wavelength campaigns, some of which are currently underway. A dedicated RXTE observing campaign from 2001 is reanalyzed to study the temporal and related spectral variability of the source during quiescence and outburst.
