This thesis is concerned with analysis of optical, infra-red and X-ray observations of the spin and orbital modulations seen in intermediate polar systems. I discuss the spin modulation of the intermediate polar V405 Aur and suggest a possible underlying cause for the unusual double peaked optical and X-ray modulation seen in this, and several other systems. I examine the orbital modulation of XY Ari in the infra-red, concluding that it shows an ellipsoidal variation from the Roche-lobe-filling secondary star. I then model the ellipsoidal modulation, constraining the system parameters. I carry out the first spin phase resolved X-ray spectroscopy on the intermediate polars EX Hya and V1223 Sgr, and attempt to identify the underlying cause of the X-ray spin modulation in these systems. Finally I present optical spectroscopy of the recently discovered intermediate polar RX J1238-38, confirming the tentatively identified spin and orbital periods and showing evidence for disc overflow in the system.
