The spiral galaxy NGC 5236 (M83) has been observed at 327 MHz, 1465 MHz, and 4750 MHz using the OSRT, VLA and Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Maps of the distributions of radio emission are presented, and a separation of total thermal and nonthermal emission based on the derived integrated flux densities is attempted. The nonthermal spectral index is αnt = -0.80, the thermal fraction at 4750 MHz is fth = 0.2, and the average spectral index in the observed frequency range is >α< = -0.75±0.04. Flux densities and spectral indices for discrete sources lying in the inner region of the galaxy are also given. The large-scale magnetic field structure of M83 is investigated for the first time by evaluating the measurements of linear polarization. A clear overall spiral configuration of the magnetic field is evident with very high degrees of polarization of up to ≡60% in the outer spiral arms. A preliminary analysis of the polarization angles indicates a bisymmetric magnetic field, with the field lines following the spiral arms of M83.
