The behavior of nuclear burning in the hydrogen-rich accreted layer of a neutron star is investigated for a range of mass accretion rates near the Eddington value. Attention is focused on the two dimensional description of the behavior. The numerical results of preliminary time dependent calculations reveal a range of accretion rates where lateral propagation of the flame is unlikely to occur. The results are discussed in the context of the irregular bursting activity in bright low mass X-ray binary systems. This research is supported by NASA under grant NAG5-7011. The computations were performed at the San Diego Supercomputer Center under grant NWU 203.
