A two-dimensional grid of velocity measurements has been made over the ionized nuclear regions of the (Sérsic-Pastoriza) barred, spiral galaxy NGC 1097.
Improved values of the orientation parameters have been obtained and unusual velocity features identified. Radial flows and expansions, superimposed on the circular motions of 356 km s-1 are invoked to explain the observations. The presence of a dense inner nucleus with angular dimensions below the best seeing disc is also proposed. Within this compact region the mean matter density is ≥ 4.4 × 103 Msun pc-3 for a diameter of ≲ 78 pc.
