Characteristics And Properties Of External Galaxies And Extragalactic Objects, Astronomical Observations

Scientific paper

We review results from the HST Medium Deep Survey, [1] nearing the end of its sixth consecutive year of parallel observations, and describe some of the highlights as they pertain to the UV universe: i) The evolution of the broad galaxy types (E/S0, Sabc, Irr) has been measured or constrained to redshifts of about one-this includes the brightening of L* galaxies by about 1 mag, in addition to the steepening of the faint-end slope of the L.F. of dwarf galaxies ii) We describe galaxy morphology without recourse to classification, using self-organised maps to explore morphological trends iii) About 10% of field galaxies to z=0.6 are found to contain AGN or starburst nuclei that are 1 to 5 mags fainter than their hosts. The Medium Deep Survey has produced an on-line catalog of 120,000 galaxies from observations typically a few orbits long in the V and I filters. The catalog includes the full characterisation of all the galaxies, separated into disk and bulge components at the bright end (down to V=24).
