Data from 20 spotless flares observed during the peak period of solar cycle 21 and from two major spotless two-ribbon flares have been analyzed, and the morphological features of the flares are reported. These features are then qualitatively explained on the basis of the Kippenhahn-Schlueter filament model. From calculated results for the magnetic energy, it is concluded that the free energy stored in the sheared field surrounding a quiescent filament can be as great as the energy released in a middle flare occurring in the active region. In accordance with the coronal current equilibrium model of Van Tend and Kuperus (1978), the force caused by nonequilibrium can cause the filament current to rise and reach a new equilibrium state when the filament current exceeds the local limit of the current.
