THE development of portable atomic clocks should help in testing general relativity. But experiments in which atomic clocks have been flown over long distances and brought back for comparison after months have yielded relativistic corrections of about 0.2 µs, the order of the random errors expected1. Here I suggest experiments to detect much larger cumulative first order effects due to gravity and the rotation of the Earth.
