Montmorillonite and serpentine are present in Orgueil meteorite and constitute the bulk of its crystalline material. Basal d -values obtained by X-ray diffraction methods suggest that serpentine in C2 meteorites is better crystallized than that in Orgueil. Water has been picked up by montmorillonite and MgSO 4 since Orgueil fell. The montmorillonite may also have picked up polar organic compounds.
