The results of a numerical experiment simulating the CRr pumping of CH3OH by the Monte Carlo technique are reported. The sources OMC 1 and Sgr B2 are modeled as homogeneous spherical clouds with specified values for the gas temperature, grain temperature, and the number densities of hydrogen and methanol molecules. Each sphere is subdivided into 10-25 concentric strata decreasing in thickness toward the periphery. The calculation procedure entails simultaneously solving the statistical-equilibrium equations for the 60 lowest rotational levels of E-methanol and the radiative-transfer equations which determine the rates of the radiative processes for the 197 permitted transitions considered in each layer. The model explains the disparity between the CH3OH transitions observed in OMC 1 and Sgr B2.
