The present work is a theoretical analysis of polarization by Mie scattering in circumstellar dust shells. It follows and generalizes a previous work (Daniel, 1978) with the assumption that wavelength has little or no effect on the refractive index m. A systematic study has been carried out for some models of envelopes (ellipsoids of revolution) and various materials (silicate, graphite). For an unpolarized point star at the centre of a uniform ellipsoidal envelope, the degree of polarization P cannot be more than 11-12%. A 90° rotation of the polarization direction is brought into evidence, which has an analytic basis: for a refractive index m = n - jk, changes in the direction of polarization are, in first approximation, given by the values of x = 2πα/λ solutions of
Δ = 0, where Δ = π∫(i1(θ)-i2(θ)) sin θdθ/π∫(i1(θ) -i2(θ)+i2(θ)) sin θdθ is
a "direction parameter". That is chiefly true for k ≃ 0 (dielectrics). The variations in Δ and P are correlated. The change in the polarization direction is likely to constitute an observational test. Satisfying applications to VY CMa and IRC 10216 have been made.
