The evolution of the moving emission lines from the jets of SS 433 was studied on an hourly timescale for several weeks in May/June 1987; the emission lines' properties are describable in terms of discrete line components whose approaching and receding properties are the same after compensation for orientation effects. A need is identified for models that can explain the contrast between the clumpiness of the jets, as seen in optical line emission, and the more continuous outflow suggested by X-ray and radio emission.
