Radio spectral-line maps of molecules toward seven dark clouds chosen because of their association, to varying degrees, with young stellar objects (YSOs) are presented. The observations include extensive radio maps of the 6-cm H2CO line in absorption against the 2.8-K blackbody background, corresponding data for emission in the 2.6-mm lines of CO and (C-13)O, and maps of 2-cm H2CO absorption and 113.5-MHz CN emission at several locations in these sources. Results are also reported for observations of CN emission from the infrared object IRC +10216. The quantities directly observed in these clouds are compared, and model-dependent calculations are performed concerning several general aspects of cloud physics. The results indicate that there are no correlations between the radio-line properties and the other observed features of the clouds, that all the clouds display H2CO absorption and optically thick CO emission, and that the molecular-line widths may exhibit a correlation with the richness of the associated populations of YSOs. It is concluded that either most of the dark clouds detected in radio surveys have YSOs in or around them or the clouds in this survey are 'special' because of the YSOs associated with them.
