The importance of hydrogen molecules (H2) in astrophysics and the connection of atomic and molecular physics with radiative, thermal, and dynamical processes in space are examined. Detailed models of the thermal structure and spectral emission of interstellar gas are constructed for a variety of astrophysical environments; X-ray sources in molecular clouds; quasars; and the early universe.
