The interaction of giant molecular clouds and their galactic environment in regulating the formation of stars is examined. Star formation in the Great Nebula in Orion is addressed, and the usefulness of carbon monoxide as a tracer of molecular gas over wide areas is considered. Results of studies of the quantity of molecular gas in the interior of the galaxy are discussed, and the molecular distribution in the M51 galaxy is compared with the distribution of luminosity within that galaxy in order to show how the rate of star formation varies across galactic disks. The relationship of molecular distribution to star formation in the different classes of spiral galaxies and in irregular galaxies is considered.
