Observations of old Population-II stars show that they formed in clouds with very low (but non-vanishing)
abundances of heavy elements (C, N, O, Fe, etc.) produced at the "reionization epoch". I will present a theoretical discussion of the expected chemical properties of the early star-forming molecular clouds. Hydrides, in particular OH radicals, would have been the dominant heavy element bearing molecule, as opposed to the CO-dominated systems that formed at later epochs (such as the Milky Way molecular clouds.)
