The relationship of the local system of molecular clouds to the Gould belt is investigated. The data-gathering procedure is described, and whether molecular material in the solar neighborhood can be described by two distributions, one associated with the Gould belt and one with the Galactic plane, is determined. An attempt is made to fit the observed radial velocities of the clouds judged to belong to the Gould belt to the model of Olano (1982) in order to clarify the present structure of the system and to chart its evolution. The fits obtained for a wide variety of model parameters turn out to be poor, leading to the conclusion that the data do not fit a unique, unambiguous configuration. Models for the formation of the Gould belt are discussed, and the impact of the molecular cloud data on these models is critically assessed.
