The emission of the 13CO J = 1-0 line, from fragmentary (clumpy) clouds, is studied. Some basic cloud types are constructed and their line emission calculated. The models range from simple ones with uncorrelated density and velocity fluctuations to complex structures consisting of an hierarchy of rotating fragments. The author finds that the line velocity primarily samples the large scale velocity field whereas the line width samples the small scales. The effects of density fluctuations are strongly enhanced (as compared to a linear relation between intensity and density) in the intensity maps.
