A dynamical model for the tidal forces on the solar surface by the nine major planets, based on celestial mechanics, is proposed. Calculations indicate that 75 out of a set of 100 arbitrarily chosen large flares occurred within 3 days before or after the local tidal force maximum. The results indicate that solar activity could be linked with the global dynamical behaviour of the solar system.
