Under the proposed modification of the well known. Talcott's method of observation for latitude variation as discussed in this paper, each star group can comprise only one Talcott pair of stars. The Talcott pair need not lie exactly in the meridian so that on following a carefully made observational programme, one can always obtain repeated intersections of the same pair providing two distinct sets, one on the east side and the other on the west side of the meridian. Each set should however consist of about four north-south pairs of intersections so arranged that their individual as well as total differences of altitudes are practically zero. The proposed modification not only avoids the inherent restrictions governing the choice of star groups, but is also intended to obviate the necessity of periodical alterations of adopted star lists due to precessional effects on stellar coordinates as well as of elaborate computations for the usual errors in the adopted values of micrometer revolutions, thereby eliminating a great deal of complications involved in delicate researches connected with the motion of the pole.
